Head of Academic Support & SEND


Details of the Post

The school is currently seeking a suitably qualified teacher with a Level 7 SpLD Diploma from an accredited organisation to lead the Learning Support department. In addition to the general responsibilities defined by the Headmaster, the Head of Academic Support and SEND has a number of management and leadership responsibilities relating to the co-ordination of the department. These include:

Teaching and Learning

  • ·         Ensure all pupils with SpLDs are appropriately supported
  • ·         Ensure all colleagues are kept informed of the individual needs of those with SpLDs and how they can be supported
  • ·         Oversee all 1-1 support, EAL support, small group support (Maths + and English +) and core skills (non-Latin group support)
  • ·         Have a good understanding of assisted technology for pupils with SpLD

 Screening

  • ·         Identify those pupils who may need additional support and write up termly IEPs
  • ·         Implement support programmes to cater for the needs of those identified with SpLDs

Record Keeping

  • ·         Ensure all records are maintained and updated
  • ·         Make IEPs and summaries of Ed Psych and other specialist reports available to all colleagues

Liaison

  • ·         Establish and maintain good working relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and outside professionals
  • ·         Be available to all colleagues for advice and support in regard to SEND
  • ·         Work closely with the Head of Academic Support and SEND at Wellington College. Meet regularly with the College team and share resources where appropriate

Access Arrangements

  • ·         Liaise with senior schools over access arrangements in examinations
  • ·         Arrange assessments with outside professionals, where appropriate, in line with the schools list of accredited professionals
  • ·         Work closely with the Deputy Academic to make sure that the necessary arrangements are made to support pupils in both internal and external examinations

Department Development

  • ·         Ensure that an annual development plan is in place and followed
  • ·         Lead the Learning support team effectively
  • ·         Keep up to date with new initiatives and advise others, where appropriate
  • ·         Disseminate good practice of SEND across the school and provide training opportunities as required
  • ·         Manage the department budget and resources
  • ·         Oversee the SEND web pages on the school’s website

Personnel Management

  • ·         Manage the support team and their continuing professional development
  • ·         Take responsibility for the recruitment and appointment within the department of new staff, staff deployment, timetabling, new staff induction, mentoring, staff reviews and professional development

Whole School

  • ·         As a full-time member of staff, you will also be expected to carry out day duties and to contribute to the wider life of the school

 Personal Specification

 The candidate needs to:

• have the relevant qualifications and teaching experience to be able to carry out the role

• be reliable, loyal, trustworthy and have high levels of discretion and diplomacy

• be self-motivated and well organised

• have excellent communication skills (verbal and written)

• be highly organised and have the ability to prioritise a complex workload

• have varied interests and a willingness to contribute to the extra-curricular life of the school

• understand the needs of a prep school and have an appreciation of the wider picture

• be committed to the ethos of a day/boarding school

• be computer literate- specifically with One Note to record pupil notes

• have a good sense of humour

Terms and Conditions

Full involvement in the life of this busy and high achieving day/boarding school is expected of all staff.  The salary will be commensurate with the experience of the candidate and according to the Eagle House Scale. There is a generous fee remission for children of teaching staff at Eagle House.

Support Workers



Kitchen Porter/Food Service Assistant (37 hours)

Monday-Thursday - either 11.30am-7.30pm or 8.00am-4.00pm as Kitchen Porter on a rotation basis

Sunday - 8.00am-11.00am and 4.30-7.30pm as Food Service Assistant

£8.98 per hour plus holiday allowance

37 weeks per year
